The Simeo / MMR-Archimed1 (may 2012) tutorial

This tutorial explains how to trigger MMR-Archimed1 (may 2012) on a vegetation scene from Simeo in interactive mode. See the Archimed1 documentation for further details.

EDIT-21.2.2014: this tool was adapted in February 2014: an upperHitOption has been added (see lower).

To see how to create a vegetation scene in Simeo with the Edito module, see the related documentation.

The Simeo / MMR-Archimed1 (may 2012) export plugin

Once your vegetation scene constructed or loaded, select the Simeo / MMR-Archimed1 export plugin:

  • Project > Export > MMR-Archimed1 (may 2012) export > Ok

The MMR-Archimed1 plugin configuration panel appears:

Configure the radiative models:

  • Choose the types which organs you want the irradiance
  • Connect them to a radiative model
  • Configure the radiative model
  • Remove the radiative model for the types you are not interested in

EDIT-21.2.2014: A radiative modelling option has been added (upperHitOption): calculation of incident light interception for opaque objects and without scattering (faster, lighter). In this case, no need for interception models, an opaque model will be used for all nodes.

Configure the scene parameters:

  • Set the direction of north relatively to the Y axis
  • Choose if you want MMR-Archimed1 to use the bounding box of the scene (all plant organs included)
  • OR choose to set accurately the bounding box by yourself: set the plot limits along the X and Y axes in the scene absolute coordinates system, the height of the box will be automatically calculated to contain all the plant organs

Configure the incident radiation:

  • Choose the scene latitude
  • Choose the clearness index
  • Choose time 1 and time 2 between which the irradiance will occur

Set the other parameters:

  • Set the number of pixel for MMR-Archimed1 (warning: many pixels will result on a longer calculation)
  • activate or not toricity to handle the edge effects

Set the paramaters to follow the progress of the calculations

  • Activate the MMR-Archimed1 images
  • Choose the images type

When ready, launch the calculation with Ok.

The progress can be seen in a dialog box showing the messages of MMR-Archimed1 and the images each time they are produced.

Results

At the end of the process, the interceptedLight_MJ and irradiance_MJ_m2 calculated by MMR-Archimed1 for the organs with a radiative model are written in the plant organs and rewritten on disk in the scene directory.

A gradient color (green, yellow, orange, red) is calculated for each plant from the values of irradiance_MJ_m2, ignoring the 5% lowest and biggest values, this gradient is written in the nodes in the standard 'Color' attribute.

The progress messages are written in a file in the scene directory (e.g. yourInstallationDirectory/simeo-projects/edito-7/Archimed1Export.out

The MMR-Archimed1 images can be saved in a directory before closing the dialog.

Checking the results in Simeo

It is possible to check the result with the Simeo renderers:

  • Select the 'Edito Outlines' or 'ArchiTree Outlines' renderer
  • For the color option, choose 'Nodes'
  • Click the update button to reload the Colors from disk

The red organs intercepted more light.

Exploring the results in Xplo

The files can be reloaded in Xplo one by one or in a single .ops file to check more accurately the results.

  • Optional: in Simeo, export the scene to a scene file (.ops)
  • In Xplo: Project > Import > Opf file (one single plant) OR Ops file (the whole scene)
  • Select the opf file(s) in Simeo's scene directory (e.g. yourInstallationDirectory/simeo-projects/edito-7/) > Ok
  • OR select the ops file where you optionally exported it from Simeo

The plants can be explored more finely:

  • with the Browser in (Window > Edition layout)
  • in the 3D View
  • with the extraction tools (Window > Extraction layout)
